Celebrating Culture, Art and Pride - Nuestra Herencia

As part of his effort to celebrate the rich diversity and culture of Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the heritage month’s steering committee hosted a poster contest for all K-12 students in Los Angeles County. The contest allowed students an opportunity to study the City’s heritage and celebrate its history through their creativity and artistic skill.

Division II, 1st Place & Best of Show: “Latino Heritage Month.”
By: Audrey Kim, 3rd Grade. Castlebay Elementary School.

This year’s competition invited youth at community recreation centers and public, private and charter school students from kindergarten through 12th grade to explore aspects of Latino heritage and showcase their artistic skills. Entries were judged by a panel of community leaders and members of the Latino Heritage Month steering committee on originality in interpreting the theme, visual impact of design and quality of the work.

The contest’s first, second and third-place winners received savings bonds from competition sponsor Wells Fargo and free tickets to Disneyland from Latino Heritage Month’s title sponsor, The Walt Disney Company. Students receiving honorable mentions for their work were awarded art books from the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

The theme of the competition was “Celebrating Latino Art, Culture and Pride: Nuestra Herencia,” and it offered youth of all backgrounds the opportunity to honor and learn about LA’s deep history and cultural roots.
